Programs for Adult Community Living!
Knitting, Crochet and Sewing programs for Adult Community living!
Seemingly insignificant activities like fiber art can benefit adult health. Participating in and enjoying artistic endeavors – even when people are not necessarily creatively inclined – can have a positive impact on health by creating a sense of purpose and keeping the mind active and focused.
Participating in artistic activities, however, bolsters problem-solving skills and satisfaction that people can take into everyday life. Also, when people are able to share their handmade gifts with friends and family, they develop a sense of pride in what they have created.
Arts and crafts and other creative projects can help alleviate boredom and keep peoples’ minds busy, and may even help prevent feelings of depression. Furthermore, arts and crafts help with hand-eye coordination, cognitive abilities, and concentration.
Many people shy away from creative activities because they feel as though they are not creative enough or are not artistic; however, even artistic novices can be creative with the right kinds of projects
Taught by fiber artist and professional sewing teacher Crafty Katie who has 17 years teaching experience with ages three to adult. A well known fiber artist with permanent installation in Asbury Park and Long Beach Island. Katie has recently moved to Ocean County and brought her business with her. It’s SEW Crafty SEWing lessons for ages 6- adult are being offered at the Lacey Recreation Department and is open to all to attend.
Programs It’s SEW Crafty offers
Yarn Bombing - is a type of graffiti or street art that employs colorful displays of knitted or crocheted yarn or fiber rather than paint or chalk. This is perfect for a novice or a seasoned crafter. The object is to encourage knitting /crochet/finger knitting in small manageable squares over the course of 4 weeks. At the end of the 4 weeks we collect the fiber art made by the group and “yarn bomb” with it- usually it’s a tree out front of the center- or a statue/seat in the facility- it’s just good clean silly fun!
Finger Knitted Pillows- Finger knitting is an easy way to knit long chains quickly on your fingers! Once a chain is made, it is stitched with oversized needles in any pattern on to fabric to create an applique. The fabric is then machine sewn into a pillow. All needles and machines are pre threaded for easy use!
Thread Doodling- Using colorful thread on cotton, paper wood to create a one of a kind piece of fiber art. All needles are pre threaded in an array of colors. Easy to follow instructions allows the crafters to be creative in their own way- the not so crafty will be able to use templates to create the same effect. Thread on Paper makes beautiful cards or framed art, on wood it has a 3d popping effect. Simple and elegant threading on cotton with an embroidery hoop makes beautiful gifts or wall décor.
Yarn Bombing- is a 4 week program that meets once a week for 1.5 hours- all materials provided $35 per person
Finger Knitted Pillows- a 2 hour workshop all materials and machines provided $35 per person
Thread doodling- 6 week program meets once a week for one hour – all materials included $50 per person
